Susan Kare

Born in Ithaca, New York, Susan Kare studied at New York University in 1978 where she received her PhD. She has been designing icons since 1983 and has worked for the world’s biggest software companies. Kare worked for Mac from the early 1980’s creating all those original Macintosh icons. She created black and white pixelated emoticons. She has a wide variety of styles – 3D, pixels, cartoon and silhouettes.
Kare aimed to create functional and concise icons that were memorable and wouldn’t need redesigning very often. She believed that ‘less is more’ and created concepts with few colours, uncluttered with detail so they would be easily comprehensible.
I think the simplicity and visual effect that all her icons represent is amazing, that she could have something created on a grid of pixels that has so much effect on the communication of today.
