eBoy

NIK-RobinsonCano-06k-tnThe pixel art association, eBoy, was founded in 1997 by three people, Kai Vermehr, Steffen Sauerteig and Svend Smital, all originally from Germany. eBoy is seen as the 'godfathers' of pixel' art, it was and still is one of of the leading group of pixel artists in the world. Sauerteig and Smital both grew up together in East Germany where there was no video games, unlike Vermehr who had the Nintendo to first influence him.  After Vermehr met Sauerteig and they started to video-game together they set up a website with some interesting pixel related things. Svend soon got involved and it started in earnest.
I think the images made at a lower resolution give me the impression that the picture is bad quality, and I find it difficult to see it as a style of art. The huge and complexed cityscapes they create are amazing. hey remind me of English illustrator Martin Handford's Where's Wally? books. Their illustrations have been used for posters, advertising, souvenirs, clothing and have been in gallery exhibitions.
