Tuesday’s first speaker, Dick Powell, is a product
designer for the company Seymourpowell and chairman of D&AD. I think he
gave an insight into, and was a good representative, of how a big design firm
works. But even though he worked for a massive business where the design
process is so long and complicated he still brought the subject, of his lecture,
down to a basis that we, as students, can understand and apply to our own work –
innovation.
I found his examples of the company's innovative products inspiring, and how it was sometimes just little extra that makes the
product innovative (new and unique). We can learn from this that with our own
design briefs we do what they specify but we can up our game and create more
than just a interesting design we can create much better work if we try to be
more imaginative and innovative.
Powell’s talk was interesting and helpful,
especially for anyone who wants to do anything in the field of product design.
