J. Otto Seibold

Gabriela Laz, J. Otto Seibold, 2014. J. Otto Seibold is a self-taught artist and author who was born in Oakland, California in 1960. Although he never attended any kind of art school he is now a famous children’s book illustrator. Seibold does all his illustration digitally because that way it doesn’t ruin the original object and you don’t have to wait for it to dry! He was the first person to produce a children’s book completely digitally.
His illustrative style is very popular with both children and adults. The children love the bright, fresh colours and adults are engaged by the contemporary elegance and tact of the drawings. I think his style is fun, modern and not too overdone. I love how clear cut the shapes he uses are, and that even though he does use gradients and shadows to lift the work off the page there is not too much texture suppressing the action in the illustration.
