David Carson

David Carson is one of America's best known post-modernist graphic designers. But design was not originally his first career choice, he studied sociology at university and trained as professional surfer. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas in 1955, Carson was a high-school teacher in California and an international competitive surfer, ranked ninth in the world, when he began to take an interest in design. He attended a two week design workshop done by Jackson Boelts and went on to get a part time job designing for a surfer magazine.
Carson's typographic style is seen as very controversial. He broke all the rules and practices of traditional typography, and because of this unconventional and innovative use of type he is often called the godfather of grunge typography. His most famous work of the Ray Gun magazine is a good example of what has inspired so many designers today and shaped a new way of seeing and using type, that has given designers freedom to express more variety in their designs.
