Lauren Child

British writer and illustrator, Lauren Child was born in Marlborough, Wiltshire in 1967 and went on to study Art at both Manchester Polytechnic and then at the City and Guilds of London. She worked for a few years in various jobs including making lampshades and selling them through her own company, known as ‘Chandeliers for the People’. It was after this that her career as a children’s author really began.
She is the creator of the well-known and much-loved characters, Charlie and Lola. It was in 2000 that she won a Kate Greenway medal for her very first book about them, ‘I will not ever, never eat a tomato’. She went on to win many more awards for her books including an MBE for her services to literature.
Child’s style is easily recognised as her own, even though she incorporates many materials to create each illustration. She uses anything from photography to newspaper cuttings, textiles to watercolours. She saves everything!
