John Lawrence

Wood engravings by John LawrenceJohn Lawrence is an English illustrator and wood engraver. He was born in Hastings in 1933. Whilst studying in Hastings Art School and the Central School of Arts and Crafts, he was introduced to wood engraving by Gertrude Hermes, who as well as being a wood engraver, was also a printmaker and sculptor.
Although the materials, tools and techniques that John Lawrence used date all the way back to the eighteenth century, his work in no way looks dated. The very detailed, yet clear-cut, illustrations are really quite amazing and intriguing.
I found the way that he creates his images really very interesting; he uses metal engravers’ tools and methods, with a dense and textured type of wood to produce the clear lines and the different tones he achieves.
For most of Lawrence’s career he has been a freelance and part-time lecturer. He is the author of a few of the over 250 books he has illustrated.
