Although the materials, tools and techniques that John Lawrence used date all the way back to the eighteenth century, his work in no way looks dated. The very detailed, yet clear-cut, illustrations are really quite amazing and intriguing.
I found the way that he creates his images really very interesting; he uses metal engravers’ tools and methods, with a dense and textured type of wood to produce the clear lines and the different tones he achieves.
For most of Lawrence’s career he has been a freelance and part-time lecturer. He is the author of a few of the over 250 books he has illustrated.
