Even though he attended Falmouth College of Arts and received a First-Class Honours Degree in Illustration, he believed his illustration skills where still self-taught, but that the college gave him space and facilities to do that.
Stewart’s first children’s book, ‘The Adventures of a Nose’, co-authored by Vivian Schwarz, shows his love of the peculiar and unorthodox. I really love his illustration style in this book, more so than in Dexter Bexley, as it seems more sharp and clear-cut. I think from all his works my favourite one is his illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s poem, ‘Jabberwocky’. I love both the design and layout of the book and his drawings. They remind me of a very sophisticated version of a Dr Seuss book.
