Joel Stewart

Born in 1977 in Barnsley and growing up in Sheffield, Joel Stewart is now an internationally recognised children’s illustrator and author. His most famous works are the Dexter Bexley picture books series.
Even though he attended Falmouth College of Arts and received a First-Class Honours Degree in Illustration, he believed his illustration skills where still self-taught, but that the college gave him space and facilities to do that.
Stewart’s first children’s book, ‘The Adventures of a Nose’, co-authored by Vivian Schwarz, shows his love of the peculiar and unorthodox. I really love his illustration style in this book, more so than in Dexter Bexley, as it seems more sharp and clear-cut. I think from all his works my favourite one is his illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s poem, ‘Jabberwocky’. I love both the design and layout of the book and his drawings. They remind me of a very sophisticated version of a Dr Seuss book.
